"My Cantilever is bigger than your Cantilever"

This entire article has been shamelessly cribbed from "bLoGoğlu" Blog, I enjoyed the writing (that is an excellent title) and the pictures were fantastic (check out the link for them). So I could resist not adding it to the archives here, show some link love and check out the other musing on design at bLoGoğlu.

And now...

"Jean Nouvel of Paris, France has been chosen as the 2008 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The formal ceremony for what has come to be known throughout the world as architecture’s highest honor was held on June 2, 2008, in Washington, D.C. at the Library of Congress. A $100,000 grant and a bronze medallion was bestowed on the 62-year old architect. Jean Nouvel, Paris. (b. 12 Aug. 1945)

The "Endless Bridge to nowhere" between the fourth and fifth floors of the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis is the "longest cantilever of occupied space" in the world, equivalent to fourteen stories in length and taking more steel than required to build the Eiffel Tower. The effect is certainly amazing, voking a sense of wonder.Guthrie Theatre, Minneapolis, MNThe Guthrie Theatre follows Nouvel's acclaimed Culture and Congress Centre in Lucerne, Switzerland, opened in 1998. Situated on the picturesque Vierwaldstättersee shore, the facility is also known by the acronym of its German name, KKL (Kultur-und Kongresszentrum Luzern). It also contains a large scale concert hall, as well as museum and exhibition space, meeting rooms, restaurants, and a rehearsal hall. A flat floor auditorium with one balcony, Lucerne Hall can seat 900 people with the use of telescopic seating. The hall is complete with a stagehouse and rigging systems for theatrical events, trade presentations, and audio-visual presentations. The hall can also ccommodate a wide variety of popular and folk music, as well as smaller classical recitals. The flat floor style of the hall is equally suited to concerts with standing audience, anquets, and cabaret theater. The rear wall of Lucerne Hall can open up to the lobby and, in turn, to the outside, to accommodate much larger flat-floor events such as rock concerts and exhibitions."

In.Ex.Arc's Summer Vacation

This blog will be undergoing some work over the course of the summer - and some vacation time.

It started out as a means of conference lecture materials and then communicating with students, but the hopes are to turn it into a blog with a cause, or at least the cause it set out to begin with - architectural experimentation - of its own.

For the past months my interests been of watching, hopefully, guiding six students experiementations with thier own ideas and ideals and as such my energies were with them. Now that they have completed that process, it is time for a new direction on this page.

Now it's summer, time to get out from behind keyboard.

The link lists will certainly grow longer, but since the writing has been poor, and there are more saved 'drafts' then 'posts' I'm putting In.Ex.Arc. on a limited abscence for the summer, short posts, links, with less likelyhood of major posting.

"Would you like to supersize your building with fries?"

The Philadelphia Business Journal reports (with way too much information on the financing and only a little on the design) of the newly proposed big-honkin' skyskraper the American Commerce Center to add to the concentration of big-honkin' proposed skyskrapers for Philly, whose bretheren built and unbuilt include:

The Richard Meyer Residences on the Schuykil (name will be posted later)
The Murano
Cira Center #2
The Comcast "I'm bigger and more honkin' than all of you" Center

Philadelphia continues to grow in multiple directions, upwards, outwards, and inwards (and by that I mean density in Center City.

And with this and the preceding post I now am aware that I have become and endentured architecture blogger hitting on all major themes - historical latin reference, linguistic word play, and now facination with tall structures - to ice the cake i'll submit this link: to the Dubai-really-tall-elevator-in-a-tall-iconic-tourist-promoting-structure-competition http://www.thyssenkrupp-elevator-architecture.com/concurso.aspx
